Botox For Sweating: What Is It And How Does It Work?

botox for sweating

Sweating helps regulate our body temperature, but excessive sweating, especially at the wrong places, can be a source of embarrassment and discomfort for many people. Think sweaty armpits causing underarm wet patches, or sweaty handshakes. Fortunately, there’s a solution for those who want to stay dry and confident throughout the day – Botox.

This treatment has been widely used in Singapore for cosmetic purposes but is now increasingly used to treat excessive sweating. In this blog post, we’ll explore how Botox helps with sweating and what to expect from the Botox treatment.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a commonly done cosmetic procedure that helps people look more youthful and confident. Also known as botulinum toxin, it is a neurotoxin injected into the skin in small doses to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox is, in fact, a brand of botulinum toxin injection. Because it’s so famous, though, it’s become synonymous with botulinum toxin. Other brands of botulinum toxin include Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin.

Botox blocks the signals between nerves and muscles,  weakening the muscles. By weakening the muscles that cause unsightly wrinkles, Botox gives the skin a smoother, more relaxed appearance. It also has other non-aesthetic applications, including treating migraines, muscle spasms and, as we explore in this article, excessive sweating.

How Does Botox Work To Stop Sweating?

Botox blocks the signals sent from the nerves to the sweat glands. A Botox injection into the skin prevents the release of acetylcholine, a chemical which triggers sweating.

By blocking these signals, Botox significantly reduces the amount of sweat produced in the treated area. The effects of the treatment can last for several months, after which the injections may need to be repeated to maintain the results.

Is Botox Effective Against Excessive Sweating?

Botox can effectively treat excessive sweating, a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. It was found in a study to dramatically reduce sweating in treated areas, with 98% of participants saying they would recommend it to others.

Botox can treat sweating in your underarms, the palms of your hands, and the soles of your feet. These areas are particularly prone to sweating due to the high concentration of sweat glands.

What To Expect From Botox Treatment For Excessive Sweating?

Botox for excessive sweating is a minimally invasive procedure that can be completed in a doctor’s office quickly.

Pre-procedure

First, the area to be treated is cleaned, and a numbing cream or local anaesthetic may be applied to minimise discomfort. The doctor then uses a very fine needle to inject small amounts of Botox under the skin of the area where sweating is most problematic.

Procedure

The number of injections and the amount of Botox used will depend on the size of the area being treated and the severity of the hyperhidrosis. The injections are typically administered in a grid pattern to ensure even coverage of the affected area.

Post-procedure

After the procedure, patients can usually return to their normal activities immediately. However, it is recommended that people avoid strenuous activity, hot showers or saunas, and excessive sun exposure for at least 24 hours after the Botox injections..

Results

It may take a few days to start noticing the effects of the Botox treatment in Singapore, and the full results may take up to 2 weeks to be seen. Multiple treatments may be needed for some patients to achieve the desired results. Patients typically experience little to no downtime after the procedure and can return to normal activities immediately.

Risks And Side Effects

Botox injections for excessive sweating are generally safe and well-tolerated. However, as with any medical procedure, you need to be aware of the risks and potential side effects:

  • temporary discomfort at the injection site
  • Bruising
  • Skin dryness

It is important to discuss these risks with your doctor and follow all the post-procedure instructions.
