Guide to Botox Treatment in Singapore: Wrinkle Reduction & V-Shape Face (Price, Benefits, FAQs)

What Is Botox (Botulinum Toxin)?

Botulinum toxin, more commonly known as botox, is used to treat conditions associated with  muscle activity. It is most well-known for its ability to smoothen fine lines, prevent wrinkle formation, and slim the jawline. But that’s not all – botox is also able to effectively regulate sweat and sebum production.

There are various brands of Botulinum toxin  – Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are some of the brands approved for use in Singapore.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. It prevents the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. Without acetylcholine, the muscle is unable to contract as it normally would – this temporary paralysis of the muscle reduces the appearance of wrinkles associated with facial expressions.

What Can Botox Treat?

Botox are commonly used to treat the following wrinkles:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Glabella frown lines
  • Bunny lines (nose wrinkles)

Besides the above skin concerns, Botox can also be used for issues such as:

  • Enlarged/square jaw due to masseter hypertrophy
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Gummy smile
  • Downturned lip corners
  • Nefertiti facelift
  • Regulate sebum production
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) at the armpits and palms
  • Calf and shoulder slimming
  • Migraines

FYI: Botox can be used in micro doses (baby botox) for overall skin rejuvenation and to treat conditions like rosacea and acne. If you’re looking to address multiple skin concerns at once, consider our Glass Skin Customised Skinbooster instead – this treatment is a combination of micro doses of botox, tranexamic acid, hyaluronic acid, amino acids and vitamins for overall skin health.

How Are Botox Treatments Performed?

An appropriate dose of botox is injected into the targeted treatment area – if a muscle is being treated, it will weaken the target muscle’s activity, which prevents unwanted skin contraction. This softens the appearance of wrinkles, prevents worsening, and in some cases may even erase the wrinkles.

For bulky muscles such as jaw masseters, a larger amount of botox will be injected. This results not only in muscle relaxation, but also shrinkage of the muscle, giving you a slimmer and more feminine looking jawline.

For treatment of excessive sweating and sebum regulation, micro doses of botox are injected at multiple points within the entire treatment area. This has an effect of decreasing sweat and oil production at the treated areas.

A Botox treatment may take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, depending on the area(s) done.

Is Botox Treatment Painful?

Generally, botox injections are very well tolerated – the injections are delivered via a very tiny needle, with its diameter almost as small as a strand of hair. We also apply numbing cream and our doctors use a vibration device which will make injections a lot more comfortable.

Botox injections are not as painful as we imagine it to be. In fact, it could be even less painful than extractions during facials.

If you have any concerns, please let our staff know and we will do our best to ensure your procedure is as comfortable as possible.

Will Botox Cause Me To Look Plastic or Fake?

Looking ‘frozen’ or unnatural is a common fear patients have about botox – these concerns are legitimate but for the most part untrue. Most of these plastic and fake cases we see are due to plastic surgery done badly, fillers injected poorly or botox injected excessively. Botox, when done well, is very natural as it preserves your facial expressions while slowing down ageing. A properly done treatment gives subtle yet noticeable results, and the average person should not be able to tell that you have done Botox; they would just think you look better than your actual age.

How Much Does Botox Cost in Singapore?

At SL Aesthetic Clinic, jaw botox starts from $600. The cost of botox in Singapore depends on the brand used and more importantly, the area(s) treated as this will determine the number of units required.

A proper doctor’s consultation and assessment will help determine how many units you need and if you are a suitable candidate for botox at all.

What Can Botox Do?

When treated early, Botox helps to prevent wrinkles from becoming heavy creases on the skin. In individuals with prolonged signs of wrinkles, the lines can be deeper, and hence more difficult to treat. The use of fillers may be considered in conjunction. Botox can also reduce muscle bulk to give a sharper face, smaller arms or calves, and even reduce the activity of sweat glands to reduce sweaty palms or armpits. When handled by trained professionals, Botox can also help in skin lifting. As with any procedure or treatment, results can vary by the individual.

FAQ

Most side effects are temporary, mild, and usually associated with any injectable treatment. These include:

  1. Redness
  2. Swelling
  3. Bruising

Other side effects like allergies or nausea are very rare and hardly seen in aesthetic procedures.

Botox is best for dynamic wrinkles i.e. lines caused by facial muscle movements, such as crow’s feet and forehead lines. For deeper wrinkles caused by age, the concurrent use of fillers or energy-based devices may be required. Our doctors will advise which treatment combination is best for you.

Botox is generally injected into muscles to weaken them, whereas fillers are injected into various layers of the skin to lift and support it through restoring facial volume. In short, botox and fillers are injected into different parts of the face, they provide different effects, and they are not interchangeable.

Micro botox is essentially botox but in much smaller doses – the biggest difference is instead of lifting, micro botox is used for skin rejuvenation, such as to achieve ‘glass skin’. Notably, micro botox is very helpful for oily skin problems and to create a matte complexion.

Having a broad face can be due to 3 factors: bone, fats and large chewing muscles. Botox works best for face slimming if the cause of your wide jaw is due to large chewing muscles. Please note that botox cannot change your bone profile significantly (e.g. broad face due to a naturally squarish jaw). However, continued botox treatments for large masseters over a long period of time have been shown to slightly improve a broad, squarish jawbone. A consultation with a doctor will help you determine which face slimming treatment is best for you.

Yes, botox is very safe and approved by the Ministry of Health for use by doctors. It has been used for various medical purposes since 1989. For the treatment of wrinkles for example, the amount we inject is much less than that used to treat conditions such as tight muscles in stroke patients. With that said, it’s essential to follow the recommended dosage and undergo the treatment at a reputable clinic.

The effects of Botox typically last for about 3 to 6 months. After that, the treated muscles gradually regain their normal function, and wrinkles may reappear.

When you stop doing botox, you will not look worse than before. In fact, you will look better than someone of the same age who has never done botox. Once the effects of botox wears off (~3-4 months), your skin will simply go back to its pre-injected state and look and feel the same as it was before. In other words, the ageing process is put on ‘hold’ during the time you are on botox.

We understand that cost is no doubt a factor. But botox is an anti-ageing treatment worth investing in, and is actually very cost-effective in the long run. If this is your first time trying botox, we recommend trying it on a region which bothers you the most first. See for yourself the benefits it does for your face, and then you can consider other regions.

Addiction refers to our inability to resist things which are harmful to us such as alcohol, smoking and illicit drugs. Such substances alter complex neural and chemical pathways in the brain to create dependence. Botox has not been proven to cause such changes in our brains, and we can choose to stop botox treatments at any time. People look forward to regular botox treatments because it makes us look our best.

It is recommended to start botox treatment in your late twenties to early thirties, which is the age where our skin starts losing the ability to produce collagen. By starting botox treatments early, we can prevent wrinkles from appearing, which would otherwise be more troublesome and costly to treat in future.

After your botox treatment, you should avoid:

  • Touching or rubbing the treated area
  • Strenuous physical activity for the next 24 hours
  • Drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours
  • Hot saunas, hot showers or other forms of heat exposure for the next 24 hours
  • Prolonged sun exposure for the next 24 hours
  • Lying down on the treated area for the next 2-3 hours
  • Facials for at least a week
  • Doing more botox – be patient and wait for the recommended time frame before assessing the results. It may take a few days to a couple of weeks for the effects to become fully apparent.

Your provider will provide specific pre-treatment instructions, but generally, it’s a good idea to avoid alcohol and prolonged sun exposure before the procedure.

When done correctly, botox will not result in saggy skin. In fact, certain botox treatments such as Nefertiti facelift are performed to achieve a lifting effect.

Botox is suitable for most people with mild to moderate wrinkling.

Botox treatment may not be suitable for individuals with the following conditions:

  • A documented history of allergies to Botox or other Botulinum toxin products
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • An active skin infection in the area intended for injection
  • An ongoing herpes zoster (shingles) or herpes simplex (cold sore) infection
  • Chronic medical conditions affecting nerves or muscles, such as myasthenia gravis or motor neuron disease

Following your botox procedure, you can do simple facials 24 hours after. For chemical peels, facials that involve machines (hydrafacial, I2PL, M22) or anything with pressure (bojin, gua sha) we recommend waiting one week. For anything that involves a dermaroller or RF, we recommend waiting two weeks.
