Acne scars are depressed pits or holes due to fibrosis of cavities left by previous acne. They are formed when there is significant damage to the dermis, leaving a big hole to be filled in the dermis. The collagen will be laid haphazardly, forming fibrous tissue while shrinks when matured. This causes a pull downwards to leave a depression in the skin.
Treatment of acne scars depends on location, depth and number of acne scars there is. The latest and most effective treatment for scars is currently Fractional CO2 Laser.
Other treatments like fillers can be used for deep scars to fill up gaps and reduce the signs of acne scarring. Microdermabrasion with I2PL is a non-invasive treatment chosen if downtime is a big issue. Subcision is usually reserved for very severe deep individual scars and have varying results. Punch biopsy excision is used for only deep individual punched out scars and not suitable if there are too many scars.
