For many ex-offenders in Singapore, gang tattoos are the most visible barrier to a fresh start – affecting employment, relationships, and how they are perceived long after they have left that life behind.
SL Aesthetic Clinic is a participant in the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) gang renunciation programme, offering free pico laser tattoo removal for inmates who have formally renounced their gang affiliations. The programme is supported by Alglow Aesthetics Pte Ltd, distributor of the laser systems used in treatment.
Our doctors conducted weekly visits to Changi Prison Complex to carry out removal sessions. Depending on the tattoo’s size and colour complexity, full removal typically requires between 5 and 30 sessions.
Dr Gabriel Wong, Senior Medical Director and Partner, and Dr Sue Ho, Senior Executive Doctor at SL Aesthetic Clinic, led the clinical work behind this programme.
“Every tattoo we remove represents a step towards a fresh start and a chance for reintegration. I’m proud to be part of that process.”
– Dr Gabriel Wong, Medical Director, SL Aesthetic Clinic
“Through this campaign, we’re not just removing tattoos; we’re helping individuals rewrite their stories, and that’s a privilege.”
– Dr Sue Ho, Senior Executive Doctor, SL Aesthetic Clinic
Pico laser tattoo removal works by delivering ultra-short pulses of energy that shatter ink particles beneath the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. At SL Aesthetic Clinic, we use pico laser technology to treat tattoos across varying colours, sizes, and skin tones – the same technology used in the SPS programme is available to all our patients.
Tattoo removal is one of the most concrete ways an aesthetic clinic can contribute to reintegration. It’s a treatment our doctors are already trained to perform, with results that can make a meaningful difference to someone’s fresh start. Most importantly, it helps remove a significant financial barrier that many individuals rebuilding their lives may otherwise struggle to overcome.
SL Aesthetic Clinic participated in this programme from 2021 to 2022, conducting weekly sessions at Changi Prison Complex. As our doctors’ clinical commitments grew, we made the difficult decision to step back from the weekly visit schedule. The work done in that period remains among the most meaningful our clinic has undertaken.
