What Is Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射)?

Laser Acne Treatment Overview

TL;DR

  • Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) uses a long-pulse Nd:YAG laser to calm active, inflammatory acne by targeting acne-causing bacteria and overactive oil glands beneath the skin.
  • It’s non-ablative, so there’s no wound on the surface and no downtime.
  • By calming inflammation early, it can also help reduce the risk of scarring from active breakouts.
  • Every session is doctor-performed, as one part of a complete acne plan rather than a standalone cure.

How Does Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) Work?

An illustration of how does laser acne treatment works for stubborn active acne in Face

The long-pulse Nd:YAG laser reaches into the deeper skin to create heat at set depths, without damaging the surface. At those depths it works on acne in two ways:

  1. Target bacteria involved in acne breakouts.
  2. Calm overactive oil glands to reduce excess oil.

Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) can also help reduce the risk of scarring by calming inflammation and supporting the skin’s natural repair process. As the laser targets acne-causing bacteria and oil production, it also encourages collagen renewal, helping the skin recover from active breakouts with less risk of scarring

Benefits of Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射)

Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) offers a way to calm active acne and reduce the risk of scarring without medication or extended downtime. Its main benefits include:
Minimal downtime

You can return to daily activities afterwards.

Targets two acne causes at once

Acne laser addresses both acne bacteria and excess oil.

Supports skin recovery

By calming inflammation, acne laser can help reduce the risk of scarring from active acne.

Combines well with other treatments

Is Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) Painful?

Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) is generally well tolerated, and most patients don’t require numbing cream. For patients who prefer extra comfort, a numbing cream can be applied beforehand, and our doctor checks in throughout the session to ensure you’re comfortable.

At SL Aesthetic Clinic, we prioritise your comfort at every step — adjusting settings and pacing as needed so the treatment stays comfortable

Meet the Doctors Behind Your Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射)

Acne results depend less on the machine and more on the doctor treating you: the assessment, the type of acne diagnosed, the settings chosen for your skin, and the judgment to know where the laser fits in your plan.

Every Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) at SL is performed by a medical doctor holding the Certificates of Competence recognised by the Singapore Medical Council’s Aesthetic Practice Oversight Committee (APOC). See Whether Laser Acne Treatment (净痘雷射) Is Right For You

The best way to know if a laser suits your acne is a consultation. Book with our doctors and we’ll assess your skin, explain where the laser fits in your acne plan, and what it will cost. If another approach suits you better, we’ll tell you that too.

FAQ

For active acne, Nd:YAG laser is a common choice because it targets acne bacteria and oil without downtime. Acne scars and pitted scarring are treated with different lasers designed for scar remodelling.

Yes. Nd:YAG laser targets overactive oil glands to help reduce excess oil, which is one of the factors behind acne. Our doctor will assess whether it suits your skin at consultation.

For severe or cystic acne, laser is usually one part of a broader plan rather than a treatment on its own, often alongside medications. Our doctor will assess your acne and advise whether the laser has a role for you.
Laser works gradually and builds up over a course of sessions, so there isn’t a single “fastest” option, and results depend on your skin and the type of acne. Our doctor will recommend a realistic plan at consultation.
Nd:YAG laser can be used for certain types of facial pigmentation, though pigmentation is usually treated with lasers suited specifically to it. Our doctor will assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate option at consultation.
Yes, for the right type of acne. Laser is a useful option for active, mild to moderate inflammatory acne, where it helps reduce breakouts by targeting acne-causing bacteria and calming oil production. It works best as one part of an acne plan rather than on its own, and our doctor will assess whether it suits your skin and your type of acne at consultation.
Results are gradual and build up over a course of sessions, and the number depends on how mild or severe your acne is. Our doctor will recommend a realistic plan for your skin at consultation.
This treatment is for active, inflammatory acne. If your main concern is acne scars, that’s treated differently. Learn more about acne scar treatment.

Side effects are usually mild, such as short-lived warmth or redness that settles on its own. Our doctor will go through what to expect for your skin.

No. The surface of the skin isn’t broken, so most people return to their usual activities straight after.
It suits people with active, mild to moderate inflammatory acne who want a doctor-performed option with no downtime. A consultation confirms whether it’s right for you.
Our doctor will advise when it’s suitable based on your skin, so it’s best to check at your appointment rather than book anything immediately after.

Patients with mild to moderate acne typically require about 3 to 6 sessions, while those with moderate to severe acne may need up to 9 sessions or more. Treatment sessions are performed once every 2 weeks.

Results are gradual and accumulative, so the “final” result can only be seen after your final session.

Each Nd:YAG Laser Acne treatment session can take around 15 to 20 minutes. An optional 30-min numbing can be done prior to the session if desired.

There are no side effects other than slight redness and mild swelling of the treatment area. These will subside in a matter of hours.

There is virtually no downtime. You are free to return to your daily activities. We recommend that patients avoid prolonged sun exposure for the next few days to prevent hyperpigmentation.

Once your acne is fully treated as part of a comprehensive acne treatment plan, it is unlikely that you’ll require any maintenance sessions.

This is because the Laser not only treats active acne, but also limits and prevents future inflammation.

Pre-treatment instructions: ensure that you’re in a good state of health and not suffering from any bacterial, fungal or viral infection in the treatment area. Always disclose your full medical history during consultation, including supplements and other medications you may be taking.

Plan ahead; avoid any ablative lasers at least 4 weeks prior, and schedule your treatment at least 1 week ahead of a special even as the skin may take up to 7 days to fully heal from the laser.

Also inform the doctor at least a week before treatment if you have any history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores) on the treatment area so that the appropriate medication can be prescribed to prevent an outbreak.

While pregnant women are free to enjoy this treatment, you must also inform your doctor about your pregnancy, or plan for pregnancy or if you are nursing.

Inform your doctor if you have other skin conditions (e.g., eczema, psoriasis) or have any unusual or allergic reactions to any ingredients or topicals.

Do not use products that can cause irritation such as alcohol-based facial products, abrasive scrubs, and toners or products containing glycolic acids or Retin A.

Post-treatment instructions: after each treatment session, avoid prolonged sun exposure for the next 7 to 10 days. Also avoid tanning beds or tanning booths and sunlamps. Continue to wash and moisturise your face with a gentle cleanser and moisturiser for the next few days and always use sunscreen.

It can also be considered should other acne treatments prove unbeneficial, or if the patient is unable to receive other acne treatments or medications.

Any healthy adult looking to treat an active acne condition, no matter how mild or severe.

The Long Pulse Nd:YAG Laser Acne Treatment may be unsuitable in the following circumstances:

  • Patients with unrealistic expectations, such as those who seek immediate or complete eradication of acne.
  • Patients with a tendency to form keloid and hypertrophic scars.
  • Prior ionising radiation to the area to be treated.
  • Connective tissue diseases.
  • Recent deep chemical peels or abrasions.
  • Dark complexions.

Following your laser procedure, you can do a gentle, machine-free basic facial 2-3 days later. For treatments such as I2P1, M22, and RF, we recommend waiting for a duration of 2 weeks.
