Surgical vs Non-Surgical Nose Fillers: How to Choose

Surgical vs Non-Surgical Nose Fillers

Surgical vs Non-Surgical Nose Fillers

Many people have varying perceptions about the shape of their noses. Some may feel that it’s too big or too small, while some may find flaws with it. Regardless, there are many ways to improve or alter the shape of your nose, including opting for a nose filler treatment.

There are two options – surgical and non-surgical nose treatments. Find out what to expect from both surgical and non-surgical nose treatments and the pros and cons of the two procedures.

What is Surgical Nose Jobs?

Surgical nose jobs also referred to as rhinoplasty, are among the oldest cosmetic procedures ever performed on the nose to change its shape and improve its function. It can also be done for medical reasons like repairing the cartilage that divides one nostril from the other.

There are also other reasons for a rhinoplasty:

  • To smooth out a bump on the nose
  • To straighten the nose bridge
  • To reshape the nose tip
  • To increase or decrease the size of the nostrils
  • To correct the nose after an injury
  • To open breathing passages
  • To make the nose bigger or smaller

Depending on your concerns, the plastic surgeon will customise the surgical procedure accordingly. This is important, as it involves a great deal of artistry and delicacy to enhance your facial feature while making them appear natural.

What happens during rhinoplasty?

As mentioned earlier, this surgical nose job is unique for every patient based on their concerns. However, the surgery will require local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

The procedure can be done in two ways: open surgery and closed surgery. Open surgery involves cutting the skin on the face, removing tissue from inside the nose, and then suturing it back. The closed surgery is less invasive as it only requires an incision on the outside of the nose and removing tissue from the inside with a vacuum device.

Both surgeries are usually performed under general anaesthesia and take about an hour to complete. Patients will need to stay in the hospital for one night afterwards. After surgery, you may experience bruising, pain, swelling, numbness in the tip of your nose, or even drainage from your nose for several weeks.

What are the pros and cons of surgical nose jobs?

Like any aesthetic procedure, surgical nose jobs have their pros and cons. The results are permanent, and you can get multiple surgeries done simultaneously. It can also correct breathing issues and improve structural changes by changing the nose.

However, more risks are involved; bleeding, infection, a bad reaction to the general anaesthesia, and even a numb nose are some of the possible side effects. Plus, a longer recovery time as the final results can take up to a year as the swelling settles.

This is why some people choose to undergo non-surgical nose filler treatment, which we will touch on in the following section.

What are the Non-Surgical Options for Nose Fillers?

Other than plastic surgery (rhinoplasty), non-surgical alternatives include nose fillers that use hyaluronic acid fillers, and biodegradable surgical threads (PDO threads) to augment, shape, and transform the nose to correct any imperfections, enhancing its profile.

Unlike surgical nose jobs, these nose filler treatments are not permanent as your body can break down the hyaluronic acid and PDO threads. If the results are not satisfactory, you can wait for it to disappear or get your doctor to dissolve it faster.

That said, nose fillers can last about 9 to 12 months, depending on the brand of filler used and other factors such as patient metabolism, lifestyle habits, diet, sleep, exercise, genetics, and more. During this period, your body will naturally break down the hyaluronic acid filler or PDO threads, and you may require repeated nose filler treatments.

There are also semi-permanent fillers, which are not made with hyaluronic acid. These can last for several years, but they cost more and cannot be dissolved as quickly as hyaluronic acid. Semi-permanent fillers can only be surgically removed.

How do non-surgical nose fillers work?

Non-surgical nose fillers work by adding volume to the targeted areas. For instance, if you have a low nose bridge, a nose filler treatment will target that specific area to add volume and definition to heighten the nose bridge.

It can also work to improve the projection of your nose tip if you have an under-projected and stubby nose tip. This is because nose fillers can be introduced into the wall separating your nostrils, pushing the nose tip forward for a more projected and sharper nose tip.

Some nose fillers we carry include Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero.

What are the pros and cons of non-surgical nose fillers?

One of the benefits of non-surgical nose fillers is that the procedure only takes around 15 minutes compared to a nose thread lift, which requires a lot longer to ensure that the threads are placed correctly. Results are immediate with minimal downtime.

Despite the immediate results, however, it is also temporary, requiring repeated nose filler treatment. If injected by a non-experienced doctor or unqualified person into the wrong layer of skin on the nose, there is a small but serious risk of vascular occlusion which can lead to necrosis, scarring, or in serious cases, even blindness.

Which is suitable for me?

It all depends on your preferences. If you are looking for a more permanent solution and do not mind having surgery along with its risks and downtime, rhinoplasty is suitable.

On the contrary, if you are looking to augment, shape, and transform the nose to correct any imperfections while enhancing its profile without making any permanent changes to your nose, a non-surgical nose filler will be suitable for you.
