Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid-based product that restores hydration, elasticity and tone in the skin.
Profhilo contains high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (H-HA) and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid (L-HA) sans chemical agents. This prevents any potential side effects from Profhilo as there are no chemical agents to create those strong links within the treatment as there is a much lower risk of an inflammatory response to foreign particles introduced into the body. This also makes it possible to deliver high doses of hyaluronic acid into the skin, while at the same time maintaining its natural viscoelastic properties – highly manageable, extensive spreadability, and low viscosity.
Profhilo is injected into 10 points on the face or the neck, called Bio Aesthetic Points (BAP). These points are chosen based on the dilution of the product – only 10 points are needed to spread the hyaluronic acid content evenly over the surface area, as the extensive spreadability of Profhilo means that it can be absorbed within a 2cm radius of the injection site with minimal risk of irregularities seen. As the hyaluronic acid spreads over the treated areas, something called bio-remodelling takes place. Since hyaluronic acid has hydrophilic properties, meaning that it attracts water into the skin layer, a plumping effect is seen from the inside out.
The combination of the hyaluronic acid introduced in the skin also begins to kick start the regeneration of collagen and elastin. Some types of collagen are responsible for elasticity and hydration in tissues, namely type I and III collagen, and Profhilo injections can help stimulate the activity of these collagen cells. Other types of collage-like type VI and type VII collagen begin to be expressed in keratinocytes – the majority of the cells in the top layer of the skin – which mechanically supports the skin, helping to address the concerns of sagging.
The combination of hydrating, plumping, and collagen regenerating effects of Profhilo are what help to fight the appearance of wrinkles. An important thing to take note of is that if your wrinkles are very deep, Profhilo may help to soften your lines and reduce the severity of the creases but it is impossible to completely remove them.
With regards to the prevention of future wrinkles, Profhilo has been reported to maintain its ‘tightening’ effect and changes in facial volume from 4 to 12 weeks after the second treatment. An evaluation of 64 females over an age range of 38 to 60 years old was shown to have the greatest amount of change up to 8 weeks after the second Profhilo injection session, and there was a gradual reduction in positive changes seen after the 12 weeks although it did not drop to the same levels pre-treatment.
A recent in vitro (laboratory) study has also shown that hybrid complexes of high and low concentration hyaluronic acid tend to perform much better than just individual low or high concentrations of hyaluronic acid alone. These hybrid complexes have better stability against hyaluronidases attack – the enzymes that break down hyaluronic acid – which then prolongs its half-life in the skin cells. The implication of this is that it also gives more time for the re-epithelialization process, as the hyaluronic acid can continue to stimulate keratinocyte activity which can assist in the reconstitution of full-thickness skin.
So while there is no one treatment that can 100% prevent wrinkles, Profhilo may prolong the duration of your skin’s natural ability to heal itself, which then slows down the rate of wrinkle formation.
