A vaginal tightening procedure is a type of aesthetic treatment that can only be done by a licensed professional to ensure that the entire procedure goes safely and smoothly with optimum results. This procedure helps to stimulate and restore collagen and muscle tone in the vaginal canal for more pleasurable sexual intimacy, and also potentially to assist with stress incontinence issues. As the years go by, many women find aging gracefully to be more than just a mental or emotional issue. The physical aspect comes into it as well, especially when it involves the most intimate part of your body. Laser vaginal rejuvenation helps to alleviate the discomfort that comes from aging, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause to give you a new lease on life – especially when it comes to the stage where Kegel exercises are insufficient to resolve it. Read on to understand how vaginal rejuvenation works, and what are the risks associated with it!
How Does Vaginal Rejuvenation Work?
Here in SL Aesthetic Clinic, we use the Fotona IntimaLase laser for vaginal tightening. This laser is an Er:YAG laser that uses photothermal energy instead of an ablative procedure that typically uses laser to create cuts in the surface of the skin tissue to stimulate collagen remodelling. Instead, the Fotona IntimaLase’s non-ablative laser (meaning that it does NOT cut or remove any form of tissue) to thermally affect the vaginal tissue. This thermal heat goes deep into the vaginal tissues to stimulate collagen remodelling and synthesis of new fibres in the genital mucosa and fascia. The final result of the tissue regeneration is a tightening of the vaginal canal and vaginal folds. This procedure avoids the complications that are present with any surgical vaginal tightening methods.
Risk Factors of Vaginal Rejuvenation
There are minimal risk factors associated with laser vaginal rejuvenation, as long as an individual is cleared for treatment beforehand. This includes a negative (i.e. normal) pap smear result (typically valid within a year) to ensure that the individual is having normal vaginal tissue, and that there are no injuries, cuts, or trauma to the vaginal region. A urine culture is also collected to ensure no bacterial or fungal infections are present. Hence, this procedure should be done preferably 1 week after menstruation.
Any side effects during the procedure are normally reported to be mild oedema (swelling) and a tolerable heat sensation. There may be some minimal swelling or redness after the procedure which will go off within a couple of days, depending on how sensitive the individual’s skin is. Normal activities of daily living can resume as normal after the procedure, with avoidance of sexual activity for 72 hours post-procedure.

Why Would I Need The Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatment?
Vaginal rejuvenation laser treatments can potentially allow you to have a more satisfying sexual experience, especially after having reduced vaginal lubrication or increased vaginal laxity from overstretching/tearing of the vagina during childbirth. It can also help with urinary stress incontinence (the inability to hold your urine, or leakage when there is increased pressure like coughing/sneezing), and improve the appearance of tissues sagging around the outer vagina area. This results in a significant improvement in the quality of life and sexual satisfaction.
With the Fotona IntimaLase laser vaginal tightening procedure, the vaginal relaxation syndrome caused by all these factors can help a woman restore back much of their sexual wellness and confidence. Firstly, it is a procedure that requires minimal to no downtime and results can usually be seen within 2-3 sessions, depending on the degree of laxity. Secondly, risks are also minimal as long as you are in the pink of health (which will be checked beforehand). Thirdly, research has shown that the satisfaction that comes from this procedure is high:
- 58% of the participants in the study were highly satisfied with the results,
- 31% described moderate satisfaction,
- More than 80% of the participants were willing to repeat the procedure again,
- About 90% would recommend this treatment.
