6 Common Lip Conditions and How Lip Fillers Can Treat Them

By SL Aesthetic Clinic
Lip Fillers Singapore

Lips are significant in framing our facial features and enhancing our overall appearance. Smooth and full lips are associated with youthfulness and beauty.

However, only some are blessed with a naturally beautiful pout. Some may have thin lips, downturned lips or even wrinkly lips that they may wish to tweak. Fortunately, lip filler treatments are available for this.

In this blog post, we share about six common lip types patients present with and how lip injections can help give fuller, more symmetrical-looking lips

Thin Lips

Thin Lips

Thin lips have less volume and look slim. You can be born with thin lips or develop them through smoking and too much exposure to the sun. Some individuals embrace their thin lips and find them beautiful, while others may prefer a fuller appearance. They may feel self-conscious about having thin lips due to societal pressures or ideals promoting fuller lips as desirable. Having thin lips can also affect the overall harmony of one’s facial features.

Thankfully, lip fillers, typically made of hyaluronic acid, can be injected beneath the skin to add volume and plumpness to thin lips. The lips can appear fuller by strategically filling up specific areas, such as the vermilion border and cupid’s bow, enhancing their shape and providing a more balanced and youthful appearance.

Uneven or Asymmetrical Lips

Uneven Lips

Symmetry is generally associated with balance and harmony, and it is not uncommon for people to prefer symmetrical features. For those who want to change their uneven or asymmetrical lips, lip fillers offer a solution by restoring symmetry and creating a more harmonious look.

Skilled practitioners can strategically inject fillers to correct imbalances, ensuring the upper and lower lips have a consistent shape and size.

Lips That Lack Definition

Lips that lack definition may look flat and contribute to an undefined lip appearance. Individuals with undefined lips can choose to use make-up lip liners to create the appearance of fuller looking lips, but most find makeup to be an unsatisfactory solution. Eventually, many opt for lip fillers for added volume and contouring.

The lip fillers can give lips a more defined and sculpted look along the borders by adding a slight projection to areas such as the philtrum columns.

Vertical Lip Lines

Vertical lip lines, often called smoker’s or lipstick lines, can form over time due to ageing, repetitive lip movements, or sun damage. A lip injection can soften and minimise the appearance of these lines by hydrating and filling in the creases. The result is smoother, more youthful-looking lips. Combination treatment with botulinum toxin can further improve the results

Downturned Lips

Aeging Lips

Ageing not only affects the lip itself, but also the surrounding areas that result in an undesirable overall appearance of the lips and mouth. The most common concern is downturned lip corners. This creates a sad and tired appearance. Fillers injected into the lips as well as the surrounding areas can lift the downturned lips, restoring a youthful and rejuvenated appearance. In certain cases, botulinum toxin injections can further improve the success of treatment.

Scarred Lips

Scarring or trauma to the lips, from accidents or surgical procedures, can lead to uneven texture or depressions. A lip injection can change the appearance of these imperfections by filling in the areas of concern. Sometimes, combination treatment with lasers will be performed too.

 Types of Lip Fillers

There are different lip fillers available:

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

  • These are the most common type of lip fillers used in Singapore
  • Preferred by patients due to their longevity and flexibility – HA fillers can be reversed through a process known as hyaluronidase
  • Note: Not every aesthetic doctor in Singapore can dissolve filler injections, so do your due diligence and check before committing

Collagen Fillers

  • Derived from human or bovine collagen
  • Less commonly used as they do not last as long as HA fillers

Fat Injections

  • Fat transfer from one area of the body to the lips
  • Fat injections provide long-lasting results but are not as easily reversed as hyaluronic acid fillers

Some lip filler brands we provide are Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero.
